Access policy, structure and functionalities

The journal Textual and Visual Media, published by the Sociedad Española de Periodística (SEP), is developed on the Open Journal Systems (OJS) 3.2.1.1, which is an open access journal manager and software developed, financed and distributed free of charge by the Public Knowledge Project under the GNU General Public License. This environment ensures functional, secure and barrier-free access for all users.

The platform complies with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1), which ensures an inclusive experience, adapted to people with different abilities. Thanks to the use of OJS, articles are available in accessible formats (such as PDF) and navigation through the site is intuitive and structured. SEP thus reaffirms its commitment to digital accessibility and inclusion.

Structure

The platform has an architecture that facilitates both reader navigation and internal editorial management. It is organised on two distinct levels:

Front-end (user interface):

  • Clear and structured home page, with direct access to the latest issues and featured articles.
  • Free and open access to all published content (open access), with no need to register.
  • Viewing and downloading of articles in PDF format, with complete metadata and links to persistent identifiers such as the DOI.
  • Internal search engine that allows you to filter by title, author, abstract or keywords.
  • Detailed editorial information: objectives and scope, ethical policies, peer review process, archive, rates, editorial team and frequency of publication.
  • Updated and visible contact details, including email and institutional link to SEP.

Back-end (editorial management):

  • Comprehensive management system for editorial processes through OJS: receiving, reviewing, editing and publishing articles.
  • Differentiated roles for authors, reviewers, editors and platform managers.
  • Management of issues and sections, configuration of editorial policies, assignment of DOIs and manuscript traceability.
  • Tools for metadata control (DOI, ORCID, ISSN, etc.), optimising visibility in indexes and academic databases.

Functionalities

  • Editorial management: Comprehensive control of the editorial workflow: submission of manuscripts, assignment of reviewers, communication with authors and supervision of the editing process.
  • Dissemination and indexing: All articles have DOI and indexing in databases such as Google Scholar, Latindex, REDIB, Dialnet, MIAR, REDIB, among others. The structured metadata facilitates their location in academic search engines.
  • Accessibility: Compatibility with screen readers and compliance with international accessibility standards. Articles available in accessible PDF format.
  • Interaction: Automatic notification system and internal communication between authors and the editorial team from the management panel.
  • Statistics: Generation of usage statistics, such as number of visits and downloads per article, which allow the impact of the content to be measured.
  • Compatibility and integration: Integration with academic identifiers (ORCID) and metadata export in various formats (Dublin Core, MARC, among others).
  • Adaptable design: Responsive interface, which guarantees an optimal browsing experience from any device (computer, tablet or mobile).
  • Multilingual management: Although the main content is published in Spanish, it can also be viewed in English, which contributes to its international projection.

The journal Textual and Visual Media maintains a firm commitment to technological innovation, editorial transparency and universal accessibility, consolidating itself as a reliable and quality space for scientific dissemination in the field of Social Sciences.
