Editorial practices in gender equality
Textual & Visual Media is committed to gender policies and strives to ensure that equality between women and men is reflected in all its actions. This applies both to the writing of its articles and the management and participation in the journal. In this regard, the journal ensures a balanced editorial composition that is reflected in both its various bodies and the individuals responsible for reviewing the submissions. In the same way, the use of inclusive language in scientific articles is encouraged.
As far as possible, to avoid the use of generic masculine terms without compromising the clarity of the text, the following strategies are recommended:
• Use collective nouns that include both genders.
• Avoid sexist expressions.
• Do not explicitly exclude one gender.
• Avoid communicative strategies that lead to confusion regarding gender identification.
• Alternate generic nouns instead of generic masculine nouns: the businesspeople instead of the businessmen.
• Replace adjectives with neutral expressions.
• Use periphrasis, opting for an explanatory phrase instead of a noun with gender: the person in charge (instead of chairman or chairwoman)
• Use the relative pronouns when appropriate.
• Omit direct references to the subject.
• Use explanatory appositions that explicitly include both genders.
• Name professions and roles in both masculine and feminine forms, as this prevents the invisibility of part of society and avoids reinforcing certain professions and statuses for one gender over the other (manager, director, secretary, housewife).
The masculine gender will be maintained in literal quotations (i.e. those quotations of less than 40 words that are incorporated into the text in quotation marks or those of more than 40 words in italics, without inverted commas and in a different structure one centimetre from the left margin and one centimetre from the right margin), as well as in transcriptions of interviews and focus groups, respecting the voice of the author.
