ABOUT THIS MONOGRAPH

Journalism and its function as a mediator between reality and citizens has undergone a profound transformation in the last two decades as a result of constant technological innovations that have modified the professional culture of journalism, the forms of production and dissemination of journalistic content and the consumption practices of audiences.

Looking to the future of journalism and observing its development trends in the coming years is one of the main challenges for journalism studies within the framework of an enormously complex sociocultural and technological scenario that is pushing us towards a redefinition in the current technological ecosystem of the relationship established between journalists, citizens and political and cultural institutions. One of the most significant transformations today is the creation of new digital, interactive and multimedia media consumption habits that involve new ways of producing, organising and disseminating news.

This new environment calls for an in-depth debate by journalism and communication educators and researchers on the training needs of the new generations of journalists trained in communication faculties.

In this monograph we ask the research community to answer these questions in order to create knowledge about one of the dimensions that is most intensely transforming the journalistic media, the professional practice of journalism and the citizens who consume news and information. This monographic issue is linked to the central theme of the XXX International Congress of the Spanish Society of Journalism (SEP), which will be held on 6 and 7 June 2024 in the San Carlos Hospital building on the Aranjuez Campus.

Xosé Ramón Rodríguez-Polo

Lecturer at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos and member of the Advanced Communication Studies Group (Geac).

PhD in Communication from the University of Vigo, where he began his teaching career in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Communication of this university. He has also taught at the Instituto Superior de Línguas e Administração (ISLA) (Portugal), and at the Centro Universitario Villanueva, attached to the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He has been a visiting researcher in the Department of Political Science at Trinity College Dublin and Visiting Professor at the Instituto de Estudos Jornalísticos of the University of Coimbra.

José Ramón Santillán Buelna

PhD in Political Science and Master's Degree in Political and Social Theory from Pompeu Fabra University. Degree in Journalism from the Universidad Iberoamericana.

Professor at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, he has also taught at the Tecnológico de Monterrey and the Universidad Iberoamericana. Since 2019 he is the director of the Observatorio de México in Spain.

Specialist in theories and research methods in communication and Mexican immigration in Spain. He is the author of three books: Visiones de México en España (2018); México, en la prensa catalana (2017); La prensa mexicana frente al cambio político (2009). He has also written 20 scientific articles on elections, journalism, public opinion, Mexican migration and the media. He actively participates in the Grupo de Estudios Avanzados en Comunicación (Geac).
