Scientific review process

1. Review System

The journal Textual & Visual Media conducts a rigorous peer-review process

using the double-blind system.

The evaluation procedure involves the following phases:

1. Initial notification. Reviewers will receive an e-mail from an editor of the journal proposing the evaluation of an original article. The notification will ask you to access the journal's OJS platform to indicate whether or not you agree to perform the review. You will be allowed to see the essential data of the proposed original (title and abstract) to help you make your decision.

2. The reviewer will have a maximum of 7 days in which to indicate whether or not he or she agrees to carry out the review. The system will send an e-mail reminder at the end of this period. If you decide to accept the review, you must indicate whether or not you have any conflict of interest.

2. Once accepted, you will have a maximum of 15 days to perform the review. In your personal space, within the journal's platform, you will have access to the history of the review.

4. The review shall be carried out by filling in a form in which various facets including content, methodology, and formal elements of the article will be evaluated. In the first review, the following aspects shall be taken into account: suitability of the subject matter and comprehensive and rigorous compliance with the publication standards of the scope of the journal; interest and timeliness of the proposal; journal in all its facets.

5. At the end of the evaluation process, a final decision regarding possible publication of the article shall be made. Once this recommendation has been sent, the process will be finalized.

6. In the event that you indicate that the article is suitable for publication, yet requires considerable modifications that need to be re-evaluated, you will be asked to conduct a second evaluation so that you can check whether the recommendations you made in the first round have been taken into account by the authors.

2. Peer review

Textual & Visual Media has a large body of national and international peer reviewers who are experts, yet are outside the authors' inner circles, such as co-authors, co-workers, etc..

The manuscript shall be sent to academics who are specialists in the subject matter of the article. Moreover, complete anonymity is guaranteed. With a minimum requirement of two concurring opinions, the editor shall decide whether to publish the article in the journal (either in its original form or subject to modifications), or reject it. In other words, the options are Publishable, Not Publishable, and Publishable with Modifications. In the event of a disagreement between two reviewers, the article will be sent to a third reviewer.

Authors shall receive the evaluation reports anonymously, which will allow them to either make improvements or reply in a timely manner.

Review form: features and criteria

The review shall be carried out using the double-blind procedure, which guarantees the anonymity of the evaluations performed.

It is crucial that the assessments should be instructional, with sufficient and adequate arguments regarding what aspects, if any, could be improved, and the reasons why the text should or should not be published.

In the event that you offer an option of Not publishable or Publishable with Modifications, you should precisely indicate the specific inadequacies in order to help the authors improve the proposal and prepare future manuscripts more effectively.

The review form is arranged in seven blocks as follows:

1. Assessment of the suitability of the subject matter to the journal, and an appraisal of adherence to editorial standards.

2. Relevance, originality, and a literature review. The interest, relevance, and timeliness of the object of study is assessed, while taking into account international research trends and priority areas of interest. An evaluation shall also be conducted regarding its suitability to the Emerging Thematic Line (ETL) for which it was proposed.

3. Structure, organization, title, and wording. The manuscript should have the requested structure (IMRyD or IMDC), and the organization of the sections should be coherent. Moreover, the argumentation should present the information adequately to the reader. The title, abstract and keywords should accurately describe the content of the article. Likewise, the language in which the article is submitted for review will also be assessed, as it should be well-written, without grammatical errors, and the writing must be eloquent yet clear, using a simple and precise language.

4. Methodology. The methodological rigor of the research will also be evaluated, including details on the epistemological approach taken, the methodological design (object of study, objectives, research questions, hypotheses), and the research instruments used in the collection, treatment, and analysis of the data. Another assessment will be carried out regarding the level of precision in detailing the methodological aspects that will enable a further and more specific understanding of the procedure that was followed to obtain the results. In this regard, consideration will also be given to the unique features of the research, both quantitative, on the one hand, and qualitative or theoretical, on the other.

5. Results, discussion, and conclusions. The results obtained will be evaluated, with a clear indication of the findings achieved. The discussion section will be reviewed to ensure that the interpretation of the results is contrasted with the scientific literature examined, the previous results of similar studies, and the data obtained from the research at hand. The conclusions will be assessed for clarity and precision, indicating the advances they represent in the field of study.

6. Interest and timeliness of the bibliography: The originality of the research and its contribution to the existing body of knowledge will be evaluated as well. An appraisal will also be made of the literature review carried out regarding its length, depth, timeliness, and suitability of the selection for the purpose of adequately contextualizing the research. Where appropriate, aspects that have not been sufficiently addressed, or for which improvements could be made in examining those facets, should be indicated as well.

7. Final decision regarding publication of the article. A proposal will be made related to possible publication of the article, which could be one of the following: Publishable, Publishable with Modifications (the text requires slight modifications), and Not Publishable. If necessary, additional comments or proposals for improvement must be included, in addition to those indicated in each section. The specific pages or sections referred to shall also be included, if applicable.

3. Reviewer Certification

The journal Textual & Visual Media acknowledges the evaluation work carried out by its reviewers through several initiatives aimed at external accreditation of scientific reviews:

1. Internal certification of the journal. If you so desire, once the evaluation is completed, you may obtain a review certificate signed by the journal's editor by filling in the form mentioned in the following section below. The certificate will be sent to you as soon as possible.

2. External certification in Reviews of WOS. By using this system, which is located in the Web of Science (Clarivate), you can incorporate all the scientific reviews you perform into your WOS profile. Once the evaluation has been completed, an e-mail expressing gratitude is automatically sent to you from the journal confirming that the review has been received, and you should forward this thank-you note to reviews@webofscience.com. The review will subsequently appear in the Peer Review section of your WOS profile, and will enable your open accreditation to third parties.

3. External certification through Reviewer Credits. This system allows you to externally accredit all the reviews you carry out, and you can download a certificate with the evaluations conducted in the associated journals, among which is Textual & Visual Media. There is also has a Reviewer Contribution Index (RCI) integrated into the downloadable certificate.

To use Reviewer Credits, there are two steps to take: Firstly, create a user account. Secondly, once you are registered in the journal’s system, and before submitting your review, you must check the box to accept the transfer of data to ReviewerCredits.com, which include your email address, ORCID code, manuscript ID, as well as the due date and submission date of the review.

Manuscript evaluation is an essential task for advancing scientific knowledge, as well as for guaranteeing the quality of academic publications. The contribution of reviewers is being increasingly valued over time, both on the national and international scene, with regard to the procedures used for academic accreditation and advancement.
