Abstract

This paper seeks to undertake empirical research on the way that news from Cortes Valencianas (the Parliament of the Autonomous Community of Valencia) are handled in television news programmes. Th e methodology applied is based on analysing the content in order to determine, among other aspects, the screen time devoted to parliamentary activities, the role attributed to the legislative power in news bulletins, the issues in the news and the presence of political agents as a source of news. The samples include the four television channels broadcasting for the Autonomous Community of Valencia (Canal 9, TVE, Las Provincias TV and Popular TV) and cover seven weeks. The principal hypothesisguiding this work maintains that, although they are the maximum expression of popular sovereignty and essential for democracy, Parliaments enjoy little importance in the news.
