Rey Juan Carlos University (Spain)ABOUT THIS MONOGRAPH
Journalism and its function as a mediator between reality and citizens has undergone a profound transformation in the last two decades as a result of constant technological innovations that have modified the professional culture of journalism, the forms of production and dissemination of journalistic content and the consumption practices of audiences.
Looking to the future of journalism and observing its development trends in the coming years is one of the main challenges for journalism studies within the framework of an enormously complex sociocultural and technological scenario that is pushing us towards a redefinition in the current technological ecosystem of the relationship established between journalists, citizens and political and cultural institutions. One of the most significant transformations today is the creation of new digital, interactive and multimedia media consumption habits that involve new ways of producing, organising and disseminating news.
This new environment calls for an in-depth debate by journalism and communication educators and researchers on the training needs of the new generations of journalists trained in communication faculties.
In this monograph we ask the research community to answer these questions in order to create knowledge about one of the dimensions that is most intensely transforming the journalistic media, the professional practice of journalism and the citizens who consume news and information. This monographic issue is linked to the central theme of the XXX International Congress of the Spanish Society of Journalism (SEP), which will be held on 6 and 7 June 2024 in the San Carlos Hospital building on the Aranjuez Campus.

Media indicators are measures or metrics used to evaluate and analyse the information media from different perspectives, and are essential to understand the impact and commitment of the media to society, culture and public opinion. The growing interest in measuring from democratic perspectives and concern for the Common Good, has come at the hands of the recommendations of UNESCO and its "Media Development Indicators" (2008), "Quality Indicators of Public Broadcasters:" (2012) or "Methodological Manual UNESCO Indicators of Culture for Development" (2014). Measuring the ethical aspects of media work, the concentration of ownership, the plurality of the system and the effectiveness of public policies has also been a concern in the EU, thus, in 2008, the European Commission and the European Parliament promoted the creation of the "Media Pluralism Monitor".
The interest in the proper functioning of the media system, especially the audiovisual system, has transcended the economistic matrix and the quantitative results of audiences to focus on the transparency of business management, the suitability and quality of content, truthful information against to disinformation strategies, citizen participation and regulatory compliance, among the most important aspects.
In recent years, this interest in identifying good practices and formulas for socialising values and strengthening democratic quality in the media has mobilised researchers, public institutions and national and international organisations, as well as information professionals themselves to create tools and guides aimed at this purpose. The challenges facing the design and application of indicators affect on all sectors of the media system: public, private commercial and private non-profit media, without losing sight of the new scenarios opened up by digital platforms and virtual social networks.
Media indicators play a fundamental role in the evaluation and analysis of the media sector and in accountability to citizens, helping to detect failures and strengths. Media indicators aim to facilitate the improvement of the media system to be useful for citizenship construction, and are therefore necessary tools to promote greater democratisation, more inclusive, diverse and critical societies.

About this monograph
Communication and technology advance hand in hand at a frenetic pace that stimulates a continuous reinvention of journalism. Organisations face the constant challenge of implementing changes without losing the essence of a profession with an inherent social function.
The integrated formula of crisis and digitalisation has created countless difficulties in recent decades. However, it has also opened new doors. New business models have emerged, and space has been made for innovative tools and platforms that have expanded the horizon. Artificial intelligence, automated content, the metaverse, influencers, branded content or podcasts have become trends that generate both support and scepticism. This is highlighted in the latest report on the future of journalism by the Reuters Institute (2023). The publication also predicts a period of heightened uncertainty marked by dilemmas such as sustainability and disinformation.
Despite the apparent perennial crisis in an evolving sector, the diversity of areas, topics, formats and positions within this context, offers a wide range of professional possibilities. Traditional roles have been expanded and we now find journalists beyond journalism. This monograph aims to explore this “beyond.” What professional roles do journalists occupy? In what types of organisations? What functions do they perform? In which formats do they work? Which sectors require their skills and knowledge? What opportunities will be available for new generations?
The aim is to answer these questions in order to explore the future of a profession that is heading decisively towards an increasingly present reality. This special monograph is linked to the central theme of the XXIX International Congress of the Spanish Society of Journalistic, which will take place in Barcelona on the 29 and 30 of June 2023.

About this monographThe transformation of the cybermedia and the emergence of new actors – including the audiences themselves – have led to the formation of a hybrid system in the digital sphere, where multiple actors converge in a common space to create and share informative content.
If the rise of platforms and social networks changed how media outlets created journalistic content and interacted with their audiences, the ongoing technological crisis in digital media has turned algorithms and Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the new challenge that companies and professionals must face.
Thus, the transposition of interactions occurring in different spheres of human activity into digital macrodata represents a multidimensional phenomenon that entails reflections, analyses and complex prospections. Clarifying these debates seems necessary in a context where academic contributions are proliferating. The economic, social, cultural, and technological advances driven by big data or AI are of interest to journalism, both as a profession sensitive to social changes and as an industry generating data and information that serve and impact public opinion.
Journalism is proving to be a fertile field for promoting analyses on big data and AI from multiple perspectives, including those linked to the profession's epistemology, ethics and the business development, but also its research and education. Examining their impact, therefore, requires holistic approaches that include procedural issues related to the industrial production of the profession, while also addressing advanced concepts regarding its value, uses and impacts from perspectives enriched in terms of interdisciplinarity. This is especially crucial in a context where media outlets and professionals strive to maintain control over essential aspects of journalistic activity while confronting increasingly technified innovation.
